Although it is mostly discursive, the Document Q –a primary source in the composition of Mathew and Luke– has a narrative orientation. The expression “the one who is to come” (ὀ ἑρχόμενος) sits at the center of unifying plot. Furthermore, it is a title that characterizes Jesus, unquestionable main character in the composition, which, in turn, invests the expression with christological meaning. This article studies this expression’s origins, its setting within Q, its literary function and theological signification.
