The intervention of earthly power in Episcopal appointments and other ecclesiastical dignities, has been one of the most controversial chapters in the long history of the relations of Church and State in Spain. This intervention was produced under the right of patronage that corresponded to the Spanish monarchs. In 1924, the military directory of general Primo de Rivera created the Associate Board of the Royal ecclesiastical patronage in order to improve the procedures for appointment of the ecclesiastical dignities. This institution existed until 1930.
