In 1962 he was officially appointed as a conciliar theologian by Pope Saint John XXIII and he actively participated as an expert in the Second Vatican Council. He was a colleague of great theologians of this time, such as Karl Rahner, Yves Congar, Edward Schillebeeckx, Henri de Lubac, Hans Urs von Balthasar and Joseph Ratzinger. In 1979 the Holy See withdrew Professor Hans Küng's license to teach Catholic theology, for questioning the pope's dogma of infallibility. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith had summoned him in 1975 but Küng never came. His critical attitude towards Pope Saint John Paul II made him one of the main critical theologians. Pope Benedict XVI received him in 2005 and there was a cordial dialogue between the two. Hans Küng praised the work of the Holy Father and Benedict XVI recognized his work in the study of religions and his proposal of world ethics. Küng received a letter from Pope Francis dated Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016. Thus, Saint John XXIII invited him, Saint Paul VI understood him, and Benedict XVI recognized him. Will Francisco rehabilitate him?
