Abstract

The figure of Martin Luther is a milestone in the evolution of Christianity. From being a humble Augustinian monk became a standard of authentic faith, at the same time hero and villain, saint and heresiarch. The earthquake that he triggered has gone beyond his own person, a sign that it had been a long time leavening. Some of its postulates are imperishable: granted salvation, trusting faith, Scripture alone. Others, on the other hand, are lethal: anti-humanism, predestination, absolutism. The dialectic that surrounds him is our very condition.
