The era from 1770 to 1780 in the Augustinian Province of the Philippines was very tumultuous, particularly when the visitador who was sent to the islands, fr. Joseph Pereira, exiled and sent the Definitorio back to Spain due to differences in opinions. The problem worsened as the struggle over the subordination of the Religious to the Archbishop of Manila and the rigorous compliance with the Patronato intensified. Furthermore, the Province was divided into factions who had differing opinions on how to address the situation. In the end, it was necessary for King Charles III and Prior General Fr. Vázquez to intervene to resolve the crisis and remove
the visitador.
