La galera San Agustín y la balandra Santo Niño: aportaciones de los agustinos de Filipinas contra la piratería mora a mediados del siglo XVIII

Abstract

In the mid-18th century, Muslim piracy reached unprecedented proportions in the Philippines. Various authors have noted that 1754 was the worst year for piratical raids in the archipelago. The Augustinians suffered from this problem alongside other religious orders. The corporation responded to the government’s urgent calls for help by constructing, at its own expense, the galley San Agustín and the sloop Santo Niño. This essay provides data and details regarding their construction. The Order donated both vessels to the government, and from then on, they were integrated into  the naval forces for the islands' defense.
