Abstract

This work study the iconography of Saint Augustine in the art of the Philippines from the XVII to the XXI century. Start speaking about the evangelization of those islands, and the work of the Augustinian Friars. The next chapter, about the architecture, presents the main churches dedicated at St. Augustine. Later can be seen the carvings of Saint Augustine in the Church and Museum of San Agustín, Manila, and in the altars of the churches of Cebú, St. Rita, Betis, Lubao, Argao, island of Panay, and other churches of Recollects, Dominicans, and Jesuits. Finally, is offer information about the most important paintings of Saint Augustine in San Agustín Museum of Manila, Cebú, Betis and the collections of “Intramuros Administration”, University of St. Tomas, Ayala Museum and other institutions. The second part speaks about the representations of Saint Augustine in the “Museo Oriental del Real Colegio de PP. Agustinos” in Valladolid, (Spain) where can be seen images of Saint Augustine, in carving, painting and engraving done in the Philippines, and also paintings, engravings and embroideries from China and carvings in wood from Tanzania. The study is completed with 91 colour illustrations related with the text.
